WhatsApp recently introduced a new video feature to join the ranks of Zoom and Google Meet.

WhatsApp Debuts Call Links for Enhanced Voice and Video Connectivity

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature this week titled Call Links, aimed at simplifying voice and video calls for its users. This feature allows users to create a shareable link for initiating calls, making the process much more streamlined for anyone using WhatsApp on their smartphones.

With over a billion global users, WhatsApp is positioning Call Links as a competitive alternative to popular platforms like Zoom and Google Meet, potentially transforming how calls are initiated on the app. According to Will Cathcart, Head of WhatsApp, although the rollout is starting this week, it might take some time for all users to access this new feature.

The introduction of Call Links is not in response to a loss of users to other platforms; rather, it is an enhancement to improve the user experience for making voice and video calls, which have already been popular on WhatsApp. The simplicity of Call Links, similar to offerings by Zoom and Google Meet, is expected to make it a hit among users.

Users will find the option to create a Call Link at the top of their call history list within the Call section of the app. Creating and sharing a call link is straightforward—just generate the link and send it to the desired participants of the call.

As WhatsApp continues to develop and test new functionalities, such as support for encrypted video calls for up to 32 people, further details about availability and additional features are anticipated in the near future. Call Links are also expected to be integrated into the desktop version when the calling feature is expanded to WhatsApp Web.
