Apple Announces New Cybersecurity Enhancements for User Data Protection
Today, Apple Inc. revealed its plans to introduce a series of advanced cybersecurity features designed to provide users with robust protection against hacking attempts. These new tools aim to enhance security for users across various Apple services.
The initial feature to be launched, dubbed Advanced Data Protection, will be incorporated into iCloud, Apple’s cloud-based storage solution. This feature will expand the use of end-to-end encryption for numerous file types stored within iCloud, ensuring that only encrypted versions of files are uploaded, thus preventing access to the original, unencrypted files by any cloud service operators.
Currently, iCloud offers end-to-end encryption for 14 types of data. With the addition of Advanced Data Protection, this will extend to include nine additional data types, such as those from Apple’s Photos and Notes applications. However, due to technical limitations, services like iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendar will not be supported by this new encryption feature.
Alongside Advanced Data Protection, Apple also unveiled iMessage Contact Key Verification, a feature targeted at users who may be at higher risk of cyberattacks, including journalists, activists, and government officials. This feature allows users to confirm the identities of their iMessage contacts using a Contact Verification Code. It also alerts users to potential eavesdropping attempts on their conversations, particularly from sophisticated threats like state-sponsored attacks.
The third feature announced is Security Keys for Apple ID, which allows users to use a physical hardware security key to log into their Apple ID accounts. This form of two-factor authentication, which can often be a USB drive, offers a more secure alternative to traditional password-based logins, safeguarding users from the risks associated with data breaches.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, emphasized the company’s dedication to leading global data security standards. “At Apple, we are unwavering in our commitment to provide our users with the best data security in the world,” he stated. “We constantly identify and mitigate emerging threats to their personal data on device and in the cloud.”
Apple plans to make the Advanced Data Protection feature available in the U.S. by the end of this year, with a global rollout expected in 2023. The iMessage Contact Key Verification and Security Keys for Apple ID are also scheduled for release next year.
