Recent Data Breaches in 2024: A Recap
February 2024: Prudential’s Encounter with ALPHV On February 13, Prudential Financial disclosed to the Securities and Exchange Commission a data breach that occurred on February 4. Despite the breach, Prudential assured that no customer data was compromised. ALPHV, the hacker group responsible for the loanDepot breach in January, claimed responsibility for this incident.
February 2024: Verizon’s Employee Data Breach Verizon Communications reported a data breach to the Maine Attorney General on February 7, revealing that over 63,000 employees were affected. The breach, which occurred on September 21 of the previous year, exposed sensitive information such as Social Security Numbers. Fortunately, Verizon customers were not impacted.
February 2024: Bank of America’s Vendor Compromise In early February, Bank of America notified customers of a breach at Infosys McCamish, one of its software vendors. The breach, orchestrated by a ransomware group on November 3, resulted in the theft of personal information, including Social Security Numbers, of 57,028 Bank of America customers. The breach was disclosed on February 2.
February 2024: Viamedis and Almerys Attacks in France Hackers targeted French healthcare insurance service providers Viamedis and Almerys in early February, compromising the sensitive personal information of 33 million French residents. The attackers exploited health professionals’ logins and breached a portal used by healthcare professionals. Both providers have initiated legal action, and investigations are ongoing.
January 2024: Microsoft’s Encounter with Cozy Bear Microsoft discovered a breach on January 12, perpetrated by a Russian SVR foreign intelligence agency group. The attack, utilizing “password spraying,” targeted Microsoft’s corporate email system in November 2023. Cozy Bear, the group behind the SolarWinds breach, was identified as the perpetrator. Microsoft disclosed the breach on January 13.
January 2024: loanDepot’s Ransomware Attack On January 6, mortgage firm loanDepot experienced a ransomware attack resulting in the theft of personal information from 16.6 million users. The attack compromised data encryption and company systems, disrupting customer access to loan payment portals. The incident is under investigation.
January 2024: VF Corp Data Breach VF Corporation, the parent company of well-known brands like Vans and North Face, suffered a data breach affecting over 35 million customers. The breach, detected on December 13, did not compromise financial data or passwords. VF Corporation disclosed the incident on January 18.
January 2024: Framework’s Phishing Incident Between January 8 and 11, California laptop producer Framework experienced a breach when its accountant, Keating Consulting Group, fell victim to a phishing attack. The attacker impersonated Framework’s CEO, obtaining customers’ personally identifiable information associated with Framework purchases. The incident poses a risk of further phishing attacks.
