The High Cost of Oversight: UK Man Sells Car After Son’s App Store Spree

A UK man, Muhammad Mutaza from North Wales, has been compelled to take drastic measures after his son inadvertently racked up approximately $1,800 (£1,289) in App Store purchases. The purchases were made while playing the game “Dragons: Rise of Berk,” with individual in-app purchases ranging from £1.99 to £99.99. This financial mishap highlights the critical importance of implementing robust parental controls on digital devices.

The incident came to light when Mutaza discovered the charges after checking an infrequently used email account linked to his Apple ID. His son, Ashaz, reportedly memorized his father’s iPhone password by watching him enter it. Although Apple has refunded £207 of the charges, Mutaza has resolved not to spend further on Apple products and has even considered legal action against the company.

In a painful resolution to cover the costs, Mutaza sold the family’s Toyota Aygo. He expressed that he did not anticipate such a problem since he only allowed his son to play free games, demonstrating a common misunderstanding about “free” games and the potential for in-app purchases.

Apple’s iOS platform, noted for its strong security measures, includes parental controls such as an “Ask to Buy” feature, which is meant to be enabled by default for children under 13. This feature requires the family account manager to approve any purchases or downloads. Unfortunately, it appears Ashaz was using his father’s device, bypassing this control mechanism.

This event underscores the significance of not only enabling parental controls but also ensuring children use devices configured specifically for them to prevent unauthorized purchases.
