LinkedIn Introduces Live ‘Office Hours’ Feature for Enhanced Learning Engagement

LinkedIn has unveiled a new feature called Office Hours on its LinkedIn Learning platform, enhancing the online learning experience by allowing instructors to host live events. This innovation provides a dynamic environment where users can interact with experts and peers in real-time, engaging through questions, comments, and reactions during sessions that were previously only available asynchronously.

Growth in Online Learning

The demand for online learning has surged significantly during the pandemic. For instance, BYJU’S, an education technology company based in Bangalore, India, reported a 200% increase in new students following the announcement of free live classes. Similarly, Coursera witnessed 35 million new enrollments from mid-March to July 2020. Recognizing the shifting dynamics in work and education, companies like Amazon have also significantly invested in employee upskilling.

According to a McKinsey report, 68% of organizations have increased their investments in employee education and reskilling to adapt to new work arrangements like remote and hybrid models.

Office Hours aims to tap into the growing “creator economy,” allowing experts to directly engage with learners. This feature not only enhances learning outcomes but also helps professionals expand their audience within relevant contexts, according to LinkedIn product lead Jonathan Rochelle. “So many of us are thinking about what comes next when it comes to work. We are in a moment of unprecedented change… As such, people are taking control of their career in new ways, leaning on their network and honing their skills,” Rochelle stated, noting a 53% increase in hours of content watched year-over-year on LinkedIn Learning.

Expanding Educational Content and Tools

LinkedIn Learning, which originated from the acquisition of Lynda.com in 2015, covers a wide range of topics including business, technology, and creative skills. The platform has seen a significant rise in usage, with users watching 1.7 million hours of content in the first week of April 2020 compared to 560,000 hours in the first week of January of the same year.

The introduction of Office Hours follows LinkedIn’s expansion of free courses and the piloting of Skills Path, a new feature to help job candidates showcase their skills through assessments. LinkedIn also launched Career Coach, a Microsoft Teams app designed to assist college students and recent graduates in exploring career paths and developing new skills.

Integrating Social Learning

Office Hours is part of a broader initiative to incorporate social learning into professional development. Rochelle highlighted features like Q&A, which have been popular among users seeking to engage with the LinkedIn Learning community for advice and discussion on timely topics. This engagement is crucial as professionals navigate rapidly evolving workplace challenges.

LinkedIn’s educational initiatives are also integrated into Microsoft Viva Learning, part of a larger digital platform that combines communications, knowledge, and insights across large organizations.
